Kimon Karoutzos

Kimon Karoutzos is an award winning bassist, composer and educator from Athens, Greece, based in New York City.
He has performed and/or recorded with world class artists such as Cyrus Chestnut, Greg Hutchinson, Arturo O’Farrill, Wycliffe Gordon, Phillip Harper, Dick Oatts, the Jason Marshall Big Band, Bill Saxton, Logan Richardson, Rodney Green, Ben Van Gelder, Eric Ineke, Joe Cohn, Jesse van Ruller, John Lee, Immanuel Wilkins, Roy Meriwether, Anthony Pinciotti, Gilad Atzmon and Joris Roelofs among others.
Kimon Karoutzos was admitted to the prestigious “Experimental Musical High School of Pallini” in Pallini,Greece, and graduated in 2013. The same year, he was admitted to the Musicology Department of the University of Athens, as well as the Attiko Conservatory, where he studied with the Greek National Orchestra’s Principal Bassist, Anastasios Kazaglis. He completed his Bachelors’ Degree in Jazz Double Bass performance at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. During this time, he was in high demand as a professional bassist all over Holland, playing with some of the most respected jazz artists in the country.
In 2018, he moved to New York City where he completed his Master’s Degree in Jazz Double Bass at the Manhattan School Of Music in New York, under the tutelage of legendary bassist, Sir Ron Carter, with whom he has been studying for the past three years. He also studied with Phil Markowitz, Dave Liebman and Arturo O’Farrill.
In March 2017, he was the recipient of the “Best Soloist Award” at the “Keep An Eye International Jazz Competition” in Amsterdam, one of the most important jazz competitions for young musicians in the world.
In 2017 and 2018 he was the Second Place Award Winner at the “Keep An Eye International Jazz Competition” with the trios of pianist Tommaso Perazzo and saxophonist Lluc Casares.
In 2021, Kimon Karoutzos was a finalist for the International Society of Bassists, Jazz Double Bass Competition. He has been the only Greek competitor to have been selected for the competition.
He has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious jazz venues in Europe and the United States such as Dizzy’s Jazz Club Coca Cola at Lincoln Center, Birdland Jazz Club, Mezzrow Jazz Club, Minton’s Playhouse, Half Note Jazz Club, Bimhuis , Stavros Niarchos Foundation Grammaton kai Technon , Onassis Cultural Center, B&E Goulandris Foundation among others. Furthermore, he has performed at some of the main jazz festivals in Europe such as North Sea Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz, Getxo Jazz Festival, Athens Jazz Festival and Utrecht Jazz Festival among others.
As an educator, he has given masterclasses at the Jazz Department of the Ionian University in Corfu, Greece, at the Conservatory of Murcia, Spain as well as in private music schools and public schools. Additionally, Kimon teaches double bass and electric bass to students of all ages and all levels, online or in person.
In May 2020, Kimon Karoutzos released his debut album as a co-leader, “DIG!” with guitarist Dennis Pol by the New York City based jazz label, Gut Strings Records. Karoutzos performs on double bass on all tracks except one track where he performs on cello.
